Summary of the case: On Friday the 22nd of September 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of around 100 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They were travelling on a blue wooden boat and were without life vests. They told us that they had no more food and drinking water left and that their boat was taking in water. They were out of fuel and therefore left adrift. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned from a relative that they had been rescued by the Italian coastguard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
