Summary of the case: On Saturday the 10th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 37 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They had left from Sabratha in the night on a fiberglass boat. We were not able to establish direct contact to the boat but received their GPS position from the relative. We then immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. The following night we managed to reach the group and passed on their updated position to the authorities. Later, we learned that the travellers had arrived to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
