Summary of the case: On Friday the 21st of September 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 70 travellers, including six women and 10 children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They had left from Zawiya, Libya, on a white fiberglass boat. They had no more food or drinking water left and were out of fuel. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on updates from the boat to the authorities as often as possible. Later, we learned that they had been rescued by the Italian coastguard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
