Summary of the case: On Friday the 9th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 12 travellers, including two minors, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sabratha the previous morning on a white fiberglass boat. They told us that they had no more food and drinking water left and that they were almost out of fuel. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Astral.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
