Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 18th of September 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 54 travellers, including eight women and 14 children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. We were not able to reach them but got their GPS position from the relative. We then immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We continued to pass on updated positions from the relative to the authorities. Later, we learned that they had arrived to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
