Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 28th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 53 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. Communication was difficult as the people were panicking, but we managed to get their GPS position. We then immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We were not able to reach the travellers again. We learned that a boat matching the description we had received had arrived to Lampedusa, however we were not able to confirm the arrival directly with the travellers.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
