Summary of the case: On Thursday the 8th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 40 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Libya on the 5th of August. The relative had lost contact to the boat but gave us their GPS position from two days earlier. We were also not able to reach the travellers but immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned from the relative that everyone had made it safely to Italy.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
