Summary of the Case:
In the morning of the 7th of January, the Alarm Phone was alerted by a group of 28 people, including 18 children, 9 men and 11 women, who had arrived on the island of Lesvos in Greece. They sent us their GPS position near Charamida and many pictures. We were informed that some of them were injured and in need of urgent medical assistance. We sent an email to inform Greek authorities, Frontex and NGOs on the island of the group’s situation and location, informing them that the people needed medical attention and wanted to claim asylum in Greece. Shortly before noon we learned from the group that doctors from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) had arrived.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
