Watch the Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 1st of Febuary 2024
Case name: 2024_02_01-Eastern Med - 049
Situation: 29 people rescued by Turkish Coast Guards after being pushed back on 2 life rafts by Greek Coast Guards
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Eastern Med

Summary of the Case:
In the morning of the 1st of February, Alarm Phone was alerted by a very worried relative to a group of 20-25 people, who had been pushed back by Greek Coast Guards on 2 life rafts, in distress south east of the island of Kos in Greece. We immediately sent an alert email to Greek and Turkish authorities as well to Frontex and NGO’s in the area, informing them that the people were in need of urgent rescue. Soon after, we received an answer from Turkish Coast Guards informing us that they had rescued 29 people from 2 life rafts at the location we previously gave and that they were all healthy and on their way back to Turkiye.
Once again, the Greek authorities have prevented people from exercising their right to international protection by putting their life at risk.
