Watch the Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 27th of January 2024 Case name: 2024_01_27-Eastern Med - 041
Situation: 31 people stranded on Lesvos, arrived at camp
Status of WTM Investigation : Concluded
Place of Incident: Eastern Med
Summary of the Case:
In the evening of the 27th of January, the Alarm Phone was alerted by a worried relative to a group of 31 people (including 13 men, 10 women, and 8 children), who had arrived on the island of Lesvos in Greece. We were informed that some of them were injured, wet and freezing and in need of urgent medical assistance. We were also called by a group of 26 people on Lesvos, to whom we alerted the Greek authorities, Frontex and NGOs on the island of the group at 18:30 CET. We also published their situation on Twitter.
At 18:55 CET we sent an email to inform Greek authorities, Frontex and NGOs on the island of the former group’s situation and location, informing them that the people needed medical attention and wanted to claim asylum in Greece.
Shortly after we learned that the two alerts are in fact concerning the same group of people, so we informed the authorities about this fact via Email at 19:59 CET.
In the later evening we learned from a relative that the group was found by the police and had arrived at the camp.
