Summary of the case: On Friday the 22nd of September 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 90-100 travellers, including five children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They were travelling on a blue wooden boat. They told us that they had no more food or drinking water left, that their boat was taking in water and that they were out of fuel. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on updates from the boat to the authorities when possible. Later, we learned that they were rescued by the NGO vessel Astral and brought to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
