Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 3rd of September 2024 just before midnight, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 50 travellers, including 13 women and two children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sfax, Tunisia, in the evening of the 31st of August on an iron boat. We were not able to reach the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We were never able to find out what happened to the travellers.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
