Summary of the case: On Monday the 26th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 45 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They had left from Tripoli the day before on a wooden boat. We managed to reach them, but communication was very difficult due to bad connection. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We passed on updated positions to the authorities as often as possible. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Life Support.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
