Situation: Around 100 travellers in distress in the Central Med, intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Sunday the 25th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 100 travellers, including 15 women and 15 children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They had left from Sabratha on a blue wooden boat and were almost out of fuel. We were not able to establish direct contact to the boat but got their GPS position from the relative. We then immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned from the relative that the travellers had been intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.
