Summary of the case: On Saturday the 24th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to two boats that had departed together from Zuwara, Libya, each carrying around 30 people. The relative gave us their GPS position and we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We later managed to reach one of the groups who told us that they had no more food and drinking water left. We passed on their updated position to the authorities. Later, we learned from the relative that the travellers had arrived to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
