Summary of the case: On Saturday the 24th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 111 travellers, all men, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zawiya, Libya, the previous evening on a wooden boat. They told us that they had no more fuel left. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the Italian coastguard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
