Summary of the case: On Thursday the 15th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 45 travellers, including 10 women, one of them pregnant, and a baby, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zawiya the previous morning on a black rubber boat. They told us that they had no more fuel left and were therefore drifting. They had also run out of food and drinking water and were dehydrated. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and continued passing on their updated positions to the authorities as often as possible. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Geo Barents.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
