Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 14th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 14 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They had left from Zawiya, Libya, the previous afternoon on a fiberglass boat. They told us that their boat was taking in water. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned from a relative that the travellers had arrived safely to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
