Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 13th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 64 travellers, including several women and children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They had left from Sabratha the previous evening. The weather was rough and they told us that the children on board were sick. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on updates from the boat to the authorities as often as possible. Later, we learned from a relative that the travellers had arrived safely to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
