Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 13th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 46 travellers, including six women and three children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sfax in the early hours of the morning. We were not able to establish direct contact to the group and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We were never able to reach the travellers and could also not get any information from authorities about whether they had found the travellers. In the end we had to close the case without knowing what happened to the group.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
