Summary of the case: On Saturday the 10th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 11 travellers, including two children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Garabouli the previous evening on a white fiberglass boat. They had no more food or drinking water left. Through the relative we got their GPS position and then immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We passed on updated positions from the relative to the authorities as often as possible. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the Italian coastguard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
