Summary of the case: On Thursday the 8th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 38 travellers, including three children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They were travelling on a fiberglass boat and told us that they had almost no more fuel left and were out of drinking water since the day before. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on updates from the boat to the authorities when possible. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Life Support.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
